The Pink city: Jaipur

Jaipur also known as  “The Pink City” the capital of Rajasthan in India was founded by sawai Jai Singh II in 1727. Initially his capital was Amber, which lies at a distance of 11 km from Jaipur. Because of growing population and scarcity of water, he decide to move his capital at the foot of Aravili hills, and named it as “Jaipur”,The city of Jai Sing. It is the first planned city of India and the King took great interest while designing this city of victory. He consulted several books on architecture and architects before making the layout of Jaipur. The Chief Architect was Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a Brahmin scholar of Bengal. Vidyadhar referred the ancient Indian literature on astronomy, books of Ptolemy and Euclid, and discussed the plan with the King.

According to that time, architecture of the town was very advanced and certainly the best in Indian subcontinent. In 1876, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh, ordered to paint the whole city in Pink  colour to welcome the Prince of Wales in Jaipur. Still, the neat and broadly laid-out avenues, painted in pink provide a magical charm to the city. Jaipur is rich in its cultural and architectural beauty, which can be traced in the various historical and aesthetic places that reside in the city.

Recently, On 6th July 2019, ‘Pink City’ Jaipur on Saturday made an official entry in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is the 2nd city in the list of world heritage site by UNESCO. Ahmedabad proved luckier, becoming the first World Heritage City from India.
